CMAC RECAP: ART OF LAKES AND LIGHT

“…truly to enjoy bodily warmth, some small part of you must be cold, for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more.”
- Herman Melville, Moby Dick

Tuesday night in Canandaigua, NY was, for me, Phish at its best. We took our one chance to see the band this year and went to visit dear friends and fellow .netters Captain Pookie and Memmers, avail ourselves of their hospitality and general awesomeness, and (in Ivy’s case) boogie. Watkins Glen is a 20 minute walk from Pookie’s Place, and you can read about his experience having Super Ball in his back yard here. Pookie basically lives in paradise, surrounded by his amazing wife, impish daughter, four cats, and extended family. And, since he is Captain Pookie, he is surrounded by art.

Painting by Christopher Pike (a.k.a. Captain Pookie)

Adjust my opinions for having been raised in the heart of flat, but I found the Finger Lakes to be overwhelmingly, almost impossibly gorgeous. Scenes of natural awe are everywhere. Waterfalls race leisurely down to Lake Seneca, which conceals ice from the glaciers that hewed this gallery from rock two and a half million years ago. Green towers everywhere around you, and it seems like art is seeping in to the ground and erupting back in the forms of wildlife and wind and beauty. In Pookie’s home, art adorns every wall, in some places with idle joy and in others with focus and brilliance. It is inspiring, and is exactly the kind of place you’d find yourself saying, “I would love to see Phish play. Right. Here.”

So, the show.

A “Buried Alive” opener, and it comes alive, “Twisting” and lifting arms and legs and all those “Heavy Things” up from the soil. Being born isn’t something to do every day, so it may be best to make an escape before an asteroid crashes and we find ourselves returned without passing Go. Once we’re settled on the train, though, we can have a drink, and I know just the concoction. A “Bathtub Gin” with an invigorating kick on the back end that will rev that rusty engine and shake it clean; that’s the cheese. Now we’re almost ready.

But first, let’s look at the sky, take in the cool breeze, linger for a while there like the gulls, and warm our wings on the day’s last golden breaths. And let’s take a moment to watch the sunset, to watch the light and clouds and wind and water collaborate to paint the ceiling in vibrant silver and azure. “Divided Sky” is written for skies of all kinds, but a sunset over Lake Canandaigua as the morning’s rain is waved aside is the most stunning incarnation I’ve seen. Achingly, deeply beautiful.

Photo © Phish – Phish From the Road

OK, we’ve stopped to smell the sunset. Let’s dance. Let’s figure out if we’re gonna go forward or leave it behind. Let’s ask the “Wombat.” “Wombat” is good and “Wombat“ is wise and “Wombat” will lead you to funkalicious love. All you have to do is let him move you. And I wish you would, because while each day needs some of the peace of the Buddha, it also needs the boogie of the “’Bat.” This critter gets a little dark and mean, a little “Melty,” and a lot dirty. He’s the perfect set-up man for mean Mr. “Bowie” to make things just a little bit scary before we move on to the night gallery.

Photo © Phish – Phish From the Road

The centerpiece for this trip is “Disease,” and it’s an adequate theme. The show dug itself up from the dirt, and we’re destined to come back to it eventually. In the time we’ve got, let’s explore. Let’s ride the train and sing off-key and do what we all gotta do, “Jibboo.” And then, and I know it’s a dark “Theme,” we’ve got to face the fact that we’re all just “Meatsticks,” and subject to time, and someday it will be time to bury the meatstick. Or, if burial isn’t your thing, you may go out En “Fuego.” Either way, no energy gained, but no energy lost, we remain in the art that’s around us. And all you have to do to remind yourself is, every once in a while, stop and look around, maybe at the beautiful things nature has carved out with a “Wedge” of glacial ice, and at the life going on around you.

And, where we started the set with “Disease,” we finish again with the essence of vitality, the Runing of the “Fuegolope.” Much more than just a climactic medley of teases, this “’Lope” runs with a ferocious love of the chase and peaks with the Power of “Fuego.” “’Lopes” in general are amazing to watch live, bounding and leaping and crashing into bicyclists, and the “Fuegolope” is a prime specimen. I personally have seen 15 “’Lopes” in various locales and I can highly recommend this Finger Lakes fauna.

I’ve probably mixed enough metaphors by this point, but just to remind you, the “Zero” sum game is much of the fun. It’s never truly lost, but it’s never fully won.

lincolnfrog Please don't write reviews like this. It reads like an english major trying to sound clever and has no actual content whatsoever. I wanted to hear about the phish show, not read poetry.
, comment by Just_Ivy
Just_Ivy I never read these recaps as reviews but moreso as an encapsulation of the experience of the author, regardless of whether or not they were in attendance at the show. I believe this is a beautiful example of just that concept and, in my opinion, precisely what makes something a "recap" and not a "review". Furthermore, with all the mention of art and beauty in this recap, if you can't conclude that the show was at least good in the author's opinion, then...well...I just don't know.

DISCLAIMER: I am the author's wife.

EXCEPTION FROM DISCLAIMER: Even if I wasn't the author's wife, I'd still stand by my above comments since they are applicable to recaps written by anyone.
, comment by Knox_Harrington
Knox_Harrington The show was great. Great flow, great venue, great weather, great crowd. Most importantly just really great playing. Aside from Disease not a lot of long extended jamming, but everything seemed to fit just right. I couldn't guess what was coming next but as soon as they started playing the next tune I would think "yeah, I want to hear this song now". The show was like a great Phish mix tape, a lot really solid well played songs that were played at just the right time. Personal highlights were the Buried opener, rock solid and powerful Gin with a great segue out of Halley's, Wingsuit, Wombat, Disease (with a little taste of Crosseyed towards the end) well played Fuego, great Wedge placement and the previously mentioned Fuegolope...and everything else in between. Zero was my third show in a row, but as usual it rocked and contained some fun teases. I suspect you probably won't think much about this show weeks from now (because these guys truly are on fire and keep getting better and better), but it will be a great show to have on while working around the house or play during a long road trip. Oh, and like Pookie said...can't say enough good things about cmac, just a great place

Those looking for a review can find it right up front. As for the prose, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the words reawakened the feelings I experienced first approaching the Finger Lakes region for SBIX (likewise as someone from the flatlands). To me, .NET reviews have been outstanding this year, equaling the task of reflecting on a renaissance year for Phish. Kudos, and let's keep it rolling!

DangleMyStash We get you're experience was great, but how was the music? Any stand out jams worth listening to? A show can be an amazing experience for someone who was there without there necessarily being any standout jams. That's what we, the fans who were not in attendance, want to know. I mean don't get me wrong, this was beautifully written. It's awesome that the sunset over Canandaigua Lake was beautiful, but that's not gonna help me decide whether to download the show or not.
, comment by FACTSAREUSELESS
FACTSAREUSELESS We've been blessed with some excellent reviews of late and I am assuming that the reviewer here decided to take the poetic approach rather than break the show down into clinical parts, because there doesn't seem to be much for him to write about.

I don't want to be critical.

That being said, if we're going to wax poetic it's great and makes for enjoyable reading, but it should be balanced with content that also satisifes our musical interest in the event.

I was thoroughly enjoying the piece for most of it because I was assuming it was all introduction to the actual review. Then.....it was over.

Still, I'm thankful to have read it and I'm not the worse for it.
, comment by CarinCarpenter
CarinCarpenter I think, at least for me; in a post-7/13/14 world, I'm going to be downloading and listening to each show until I think it's no longer worth my time.

Last night's DWD was incredible. The rest of the set, not so much, in my opinion, but it's certainly well-played music by a band that's on top of their game right now. That game may be different than the one twenty years ago, but a game's a game.

Sprachtor You don't like the review, listen to the show and formulate your own opinion. You guys sound a little selfish. No one gets paid here to break down shows for insecure Phish fans.
, comment by BirdsOfAHeather
BirdsOfAHeather I liked your review. Something different than the technical play by play. For me, it encapsulated what a Phish show is. Not just one sense, but all five, and perhaps six.

Phish has built an entire library of songs heavily based on metaphorical lyrics, and I think your review, in a way, was a nice tribute to that.

Plus everyone can just go listen to it for free today on LivePhish and then decide if they want to buy it. I don't think you need to rely on a review, or anyone to tell you what you should like. Form your own opinions, there's no right or wrong. Everytime I see the words "tahoe tweezer" as a basis for comparison for all songs 3.0, I die a little inside. Not that it wasn't great, it was, but the best version of a song is the one that really speaks to you for some reason, who cares if it isn't technically the greatest version of all time. And hey, if you don't like the review, don't read it, find something else to do! Simple as that!

Thanks for sharing your experience in a creative way.
, comment by elton_john
elton_john I absolutely love this review/essay! The show and the Finger Lakes area were both incredible!

crickjaw Don't see what so many are bent out of shape that the author did not do a song-by-song breakdown like others so. The show is readily available (or will be). Listen for yourself.
, comment by dogfacedboyman
dogfacedboyman I wish I went to this show. I was thinking about going; I figured it was an out of the way place, one night, with rest the night before coming off a big run, a beautiful place. I would kick myself if I wasn't 40. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Seems like my life's story, time is a flat circle some say. I am listening right now, beside the setlist being awsome, it sounds good. I don't mind a metaphorical review, if you want to know about the musicality; listen to the show. Phish are very full of metaphors and hidden knowledge, like another comment says. So therefore, I feel its a worthy review for a great show. Dang, does anyone have a time machine?
, comment by ckess22
ckess22 Sheesh, people, you hv avenues to listen to the show and formulate your own opinion. So maybe take the dive and listen to a show without any expectations...it could be thrilling, or it could fall flat; at least you'll be living a little.

Yeah I'm more-or-less with Ivy on this -- I know many fans, sometimes myself included, who experience shows as a sort of unfolding narrative, told thru song sequence, lyrics, music, set and setting. This recap playfully captures that feeling, and I enjoyed reading it. The write-up could have benefited from a little more about the music itself, IMO --i.e. are there some gems or jams I don't want to miss?-- but overall I appreciate the idiosyncratic flavor each recapper has been sharing this summer.

That said, @solargarlic78 (who's been posting in setlist comments) is a Phish.net MVP for me this tour; more review-oriented, his layman-friendly music theory analysis of each show has been a refreshing supplement to these more experiential recaps.

Thanks to all who attempt to share some sense of their experience with language--when talking about music, it's arguably a rather dubious prospect...

Really enjoyed the Disease, everything else is entirely forgettable.

MOstGhoSt the photography included with this review is really amazing. i get the impression that the location is most stunning.

jeremy w is a tough act to follow with the past weekend NYc review. and NYc randalls island is also not the easiest experience to follow... such intensity cannot be sustained indefinitely.

maybe we compare things too much at times and should look at things in context? this is a tuesday night out in the far off reaches of new york state. how could the intensity of what just happened this past weekend in the center of the world happen again in a calm cerebral distant space of such natural beauty and why should it be expected that it will happen every time?

maybe the jou jou needed a catnap...

in short, it is not fair to compare anything to what happens in or is of NYc.

MOstGhoSt set 2 appears to be amazing just based on the short list of songs played. i am definitely going to download it and check it out.

in atlantic city night 3 phish pulled a fast one with an amazing jam and vocal improvisation unexpectedly placed within theme from the bottom. theme from the bottom is fair play for unique jam potential.

i am curious the jam following theme and want to hear it for myself.

theme from the bottom - jam - tweezer - tweezer reprise

potentially very interesting.

Jestinphish While not my idea of a review, I liked this. To the people that want to read a review "so they can figure out if they should download it..." and "if its worth three hours of my time..." Do you not go to shows just in case its not a barn burner? I, like many on here, have seen the Phish into the triple digits now. I've been to shows that have damn near brought tears to my eyes and I've been to shows that left me wondering what I was missing at home that night. Not one single show I've ever been to has failed to have a moment that meant something to me, on a personal level. Its what hooked me damn near 20 years ago and its what keeps me coming back.

There are dozens of reviews posted on a handful of sites after every show. If you don't like this one then take your finger out of your ass and click on another site. Don't shit on someone just for the sake of being a dick. Grow up. And you can download every show. This isn't the days of chasing phatty Dead tapes anymore. It's all out there. Take a listen. Fast forward if you're not digging it. But form your own damn opinion. I haven't listened to every show in the last couple years but I have them all on a hard drive (thanks etree) and I will listen to them in time.

These guys won't be doing this forever. The older people on here will remember when Jerry died. I had the pleasure of being at the last two Dead shows at Soldier Field and had plans to go on tour the next summer... Never got the chance. Thank God I was introduced to these four guys and found something that was uniquely mine. My life has been so much happier for it.

If you truly love this band, listen to everything. Old, new, sloppy Trey, sober Trey, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, type I, type II.... Just listen. And be amazed. No one does it better. No one. Stop your god damn whining and start remembering that shit. And for Pete's sake... quit being such a bunch of whiny bitches..

Your comment is not appreciated by me nor do I think it's remotely funny. @TheEmu is the champion on this site when it comes to snarky, pissy, negative comments, including his lonely and whiney contribution to this thread.

I was constructive in my criticism and tried to end on a positive note but you guys won't have it.

It would be nice if you all would stop circling the wagons around each other like a juvenile high school clique every time someone gets their toes stepped on.

I love this site and try to be positive most all of the time. Only a couple of people in this thread have been nasty in their comments, most everyone else was simply giving honest feedback. There's no need to escalate the dialogue by getting all defensive.

The reviewer took a different approach. I respect that. It was also a risk. Many people, myself included, have come to look forward to the regularly excellent commentary and perspective that comes from the admin. team, and I appreciate all of you for it, but you folks are waaaaay too sensitive at times and this is one of them.

There's nothing nasty or thankless about expecting some musical analysis when we come to this blog to read a recap. You've set the standard for it, and people have come to expect it. When it doesn't happen, you need to know that they'll be some dissappointed folks.

@FACTSAREUSELESS

First of all, @johnnyd 's comment that you disapprove of wasn't directed at you. It was directed at the simpleton who felt it necessary to actually create an account to come on an insult someone in a community that he has - by his own admission - contributed absolutely nothing to, ever. So considering that, getting a sarcastic reaction from someone who has dedicated countless hours to this community is appropriate.

Additionally, the fact that you are offended and don't find it remotely funny is 100 fucking percent irrelevant, seeing that it had nothing to do with you. It had to do with a lurker-nobody throwing around childish insults.

But really what is the big knee-slapper here is how you accuse people of circling their wagons and getting all defensive when someone gets their toes stepped on - after countless childish comments from people circling their wagons and getting all accusatory and defensive when someone doesn't write a recap - a personal experience of a show - and they don't do it in the way that you think they should. Hypocrisy is a bore. You can do better than that. Who the fuck cares how people think it should be written? When sitting down to express yourself and write something - anything do you sweat about how many people will approve of the path you chose? Becasue unless you're doing it for a college course or for someone who signs your paychecks, I fucking hope not. Sometimes people use creative license when recounting creative experiences.

Sorry to explode everyone's unrealistic expectations, but no one owes you a recounting of a show to your specifications.

Having said that, would *I* have preferred a little more meat in the bits about the performance itself? Yes, I would have.

But it also requires NO effort or secret levels of understanding to be able to discern that the author was absolutely over the moon about his show experience. And it seems that anyone having read it could very easily understand that "hey, this show really affected this guy in a positive way. I'm gonna go listen and see for myself." Instead of being spoon-fed a minute-by-minute spoiler of the whole show.

But no, instead just a bunch of pissy, self-righteous bullshit instead.

@johnnyd - sorry to contribute to the hostility in this thread. There's far too much arrogant, rude and childish condescension from people on .net anymore and it reminds me of why I faded away from this place a few years ago.

FACTSAREUSELESS I wasn't upset or offended by the review. I was defending those that the admin. members were condescendingly making fun of because they had the "audacity" to state that they were looking for something more than a memoir.

Never thought @johnnyd was directing anything at me, but his comment pushed me over the edge of aggravation.

A week and a half ago you had a guest blogger on here who wrote a review for one of the SPAC shows which had very little musical analysis. I made a good natured comment in my post about in that thread about how nice the review was and it would be nice to have a little more analysis, but nice job, sort of thing.

She, rather than acting like a two-year-old, accommodated everyone by adding an excellent four-paragraph addendum to her review which added much. Many appreciated it and stated so.

That's all the first few people in this thread were asking for. I didn't care. It would've been nice, but then @TheEmu posted his whining, juvenile "The show sucked, can't you tell?" bullshit, as in "I'm taking my ball and going home now because you're all mean".

Stupid. That's what started all this.

So I'm happy that you've exercised your right to swear and call names. I'm just telling it like I see it.

I'm not posting again. Feel free to have the last word if you like, I'm done.

I want to say publically that I regret replying to @johnnyd and dragging his post and name into my rant, as truly it was not his post that I was reacting to. I erred by handling it in such a knee-jerk manner. My apologies @johnnyd. I was wrong.

My anger was actually kindled by @sausagemahoney and @TheEmu, to whom I also apologize publically for escalating things.

Would like to end this thread in peace.

phisherman I got an idea anyone who doesn't like these reviews go start your own site and review shows yourself. If it is any good you will have followers.

sausagemahoney Guys, there's really no need for apologies. Speaking only for myself, I was joking and figured everybody knew that. I realize not every review is to everyone's taste, but that's by design. We don't have a template and want different voices to contribute, each in their own way. If you don't like it, that's okay, but posting comments like "the people who write for .net are terrible" is neither fair nor constructive. You can say these things if you want, but you might get your own balls busted a little in return. It's not that big a deal.
